People Power in Larkhall Once Again as Locals Demonstrate Against Bank Closure

Larkhall residents rallied together to demonstrate against the closure of the town’s last bank branch.

Locals peacefully voiced their concerns outside the Bank of Scotland on the morning of Thursday 11th December with the branch set for closure on 8th January 2026. 

Larkhall Plan Partnership Chairperson, Nancy Barr, said: “What a fantastic turnout from the community which shows the strength of feeling local people have about protecting our services. Thank you to everyone who came along and made the demonstration so powerful. 

“It is crucial that we raise our voice when these decisions are imposed on us. Large organisations and corporations expect people to be apathetic and assume they don’t have power which helps them to push through these decisions, but we have shown that they will be challenged and people will put up a fight for the services they deserve.

“The most vulnerable people will be hit hardest by the closure, it will disrupt local businesses and impact our thriving high street. We need an independent review into the closure to bring transparency to the decision.

“It is deeply disappointing that the Bank of Scotland has not engaged with communities, or published the evidence behind this decision, and have completely dismissed concerns raised.”

South Lanarkshire Council unanimously voted to support a motion calling for an independent review of the planned closure of the Bank of Scotland’s Larkhall branch.

Local MSPs have also raised the planned closure of Larkhall’s last remaining bank at Holyrood as politicians from all parties outlined their opposition to the loss of local branches across the country.3
